He drove to Mexico from Brooklyn on his honeymoon

He drove a diesel car in the 70’s when there were lines for gas and filled up at the factory. we had a diesel pump there for the trucks.

Some Eddie Epstein proclamations:

• No color TV ever.  (he said this is the 60’s)
• No TV in the kitchen. (this lasted till around 1980)
• Your brother is your best friend.
• Nothing too good lasts too long.  (this was in reference to a great deal at the time)
• 90% of the time when something is broken, it’s probably something minor.  (this is one of my favorites)
• It’ll turn up.  (he often said this when you  were looking for something and he was usually right)
• If you want to know how someone feels about you, think of how you feel about them.
• When a father helps a son, both laugh. when a son helps a father, both cry.
• Don’t worry in advance
• Be a good supplier
• If a goy can do it, I can do it.
• You can only skid straight. (he said this when driving on slippery roads)
• The door is not locked from the inside. (meaning leave anytime you wish)
• If a worker has his hands in his pockets, it means he has nothing to do. 
• If something is lost? It will probably turn up.
• There are two things I’ll never miss; yeta hens and yenta feese.  Or hentz. (Meaning hands)
• A man never got poor from giving to charity
• I’m not impressed with how much someone has. I’m impressed with how much they give.

He loved napoleons

He hated the smell of eucalyptus

He drove Ford falcons during his sales days of the 60’s

Made the first slow dissolving puck in the pool industry

Invented the in line divert-a-trol chlorinator

Invented the blow out extender

He played tennis with two hands….switched to lefty instead of hitting a backhand

He was born a leftie but taught to write with his right hand

His given name was Israel and later changed to Edward

“Tinny” came from his older sister who said he was a tinny baby. That stuck.

He loved cheap beer. The cheaper the better.

He loved a bargain. He used to buy imperfect alligator shirts for a buck apiece from Ben Shaw who called him Timmy.

He used a bathroom stall without a door at the Maryland house on rte 95 in the mid 60’s on our way to Miami.

 

Here are two of his famous poems:

The pilgrims left England, it was an impossible plight

they had no freedom and their lives were a fright

they came to the new world hoping for more

they did find freedom, but life was a chore

Just living at Plymouth was a fight for survival

the Indians were helpful in their revival

after all their suffering, they gave thanks for just giving

In naming the holiday, they called it Thanksgiving.

You have heard of that famous time

When Paul upon his horse did climb

It was April 18^th of seventy-five

When the British started their Military drive

In the old north church as the light did flicker

Paul urged his horse to run much quicker

He warned John Hancock, and other friends too

He warned John Adams*,  but he already knew

Our country will never have anything to fear

As long as we have patriots like Paul Revere

* we later were told that is was Sam Adams but in all the years, only

one person pointed that out.

 

He was in the liquid bleach manufacturing business in Brooklyn and then Newark, NJ and eventually Kearny, NJ with his brothers Norman and Bernie. Norman was bought out many years ago and he continued partnering with Bernie. Around 1960, they bought Alden Leeds Inc. It was started by some people they knew from the bleach business and they saw the potential in pool chemicals. Eddie would go to Newark airport and park in front for free. He would take the first plane going anywhere as the nation was his to go after. His enthusiasm and charm helped him develop relationships with the future titans of the industry. The business quickly expanded. Around 1970, a customer of his who was also a distributor of pool equipment decided to make his own chemicals. When he told Eddie the news, his immediate reaction was to open an equipment company nearby. That is when Jet Line was born. It’s now the shining star of the Epstein Affiliated companies.
